Carat Weight

The weight of a diamond.

Carat is the unit of measurement used to determine a diamond's weight. A carat is equal to 200 milligrams.  A carat is also divided into 100 points. Half or 0.5 carat is equal to 50 points.

Carat is commonly associated with the size of a diamond, since diamonds that are greater in weight are visibly larger. Larger diamonds are rare and have greater value per carat. Thus, the price of a diamond rises exponentially to its size. For many people, size is the most important detail when being presented with a diamond. Within a given budget, which is traditionally 2 months salary, there may be some trading off to do with the other four "C's" in order to find your perfect diamond.

A diamond can also appear larger or smaller depending on the setting. Our consultants will recommend the right setting to optimise the beauty of your selected stone.

If you are thinking about purchasing a relatively large diamond, then there are certain variables to keep in mind. If the carat surpasses a certain “point” then the overall price of the diamond will go up a considerable amount.

The “point” system works accordingly:

0.33, 0.65, 0.90 - It is difficult to dedicate where prices may go up at these points. When they do go up, they won’t be very substantial.

0.25, 0.50, 0.75 - The price of diamonds increase by large amounts at these quarterly intervals.

1.00, 2.00 – This is the most noticeable points of where price will increase significantly in relation to the diamond’s carat.
