How to Design Your Engagement Ring
An engagement ring is one of the most important and emotional purchases you'll make, that will last a lifetime. Whether you want your proposal to be a surprise or to include her in the design process, the following steps will guide you on the factors to consider.
Step 1: Choosing a diamond
Firstly, understand the 4 Cs - cut, colour, clarity and carat so that you can make an informed choice on the right balance of factors to suit your needs. Next choose the shape of the stone (round or fancy), depending on the look you wish to create.
Step 2: Ring design
The design should reflect the statement you want to make. Consider a solitaire (centre stone only) for a simple and clean look. Alternately, a setting with side stones creates a more unique and interesting design. Whether the engagement ring will be worn together with the wedding band is another important factor in designing your ring.
Step 3: Precious metals
Decide which metal best appeals to you. Choices include platinum, gold (18K, 14K or 9K) in white, yellow or rose. These metals may be combined for two tone effects.
Step 4: Surfaces
Finally, choose from high polish, satin finish or rough texture, to achieve the desired look and feel for your ring.
